Just because tax day has passed, your accounting has not

April 16th, 20082 Comments

Now that tax day has finally passed us, you’re probably ready to hide everything that reminds you of budgeting and planning your business finances.

But take heart! Now you have a clean slate for the next year. Catch up on everything that’s been going on since January and make this year the year you keep everything in order. From keeping receipts in one place (even if it’s just a cookie tin, for goodness sake) to keeping your bills in a file to be looked over for deductions later.

One of my favorite tips is to write on the back of receipts in case they become mislabeled. Even if it’s just what I bought the item for and the date on the back with the total amount. If it’s a faded or light receipt I also write what the item was and where I purchased it.

Then into the cookie tin it goes.

Yeah, writing stuff helps us lowly bookkeepers. My biggest piece of advice is to go paperless. Scan, baby, scan!

How could I have NOT put scanning in there as an option, duh! Thanks for that Candy…greatest of all the accountants that ever were. Glad to see you’re still alive after tax day.

I always worry you’ll run off to Rio after 4/15 LOL
