The Importance of Diversifying.
If you’re anything like me you believe that good things are going to come to you. You know this because they do. I mean, there’s no proof like the kind in the pudding, right? I have a nice life, an amazing family, friends that are understanding of my weird business. The whole nine yards.
When I originally went into business I was looking for a niche. I mean, everyone says have a niche or you won’t be able to target your marketing. At first I thought, "Nah…I don’t like many people, so people I like can be a niche for me!" But I wised up a few months later when I realized that they had to be able to pay their invoices as well.
I ended up stumbling upon internet marketers as a niche. They’re funny, smart, and really driven.
They’re also highly emotional.
That’s not a bad thing. Don’t get me wrong. But if there’s one thing I understand it’s human emotion and the nicest person can turn into a raging tiger if they feel they’ve been crossed. People that just pretend to be nice and are really shady and slimy get even worse when they feel they’ve been crossed!
So…enter diversification…
As much as I love and trust my clients, they don’t know everything about my business. They can’t. It wouldn’t be healthy for either party. The internet marketers I target with this particular site don’t know about my other sites that are specifically targeted for other niches. Having one niche is business survival. Having multiple niches is business success.
If everyone knows everything you’re doing – they have more power to wield over YOUR business.
I don’t care if you’re a virtual assistant, internet marketer, or dog groomer – the only person who should be able to make or break your business is YOU – the owner.
No one person, be it client, contractor, or anyone else you know, should have the power to make your business struggle. Diversifying also sets you up in the "sweet spot" where if someone does try to wield power they THINK they have, but don’t…you can know you made the best decision in the world by telling them to take a hike.
Prepare in advance. My motto is "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst". This way, even when someone thinks they’ve taken a melon baller to your business…the only thing that will result is your ability to sleep peacefully, knowing you truly made the right decision.
